On September 23, 2013, the federal government will start enforcing the revised HIPAA regulations. Penalties for unauthorized disclosure of Protected Health Information could be as steep as $50,000 depending on the circumstances of the disclosure. Some of the new changes include: addition of business associates and the presumption of provider guilt for harm to patients when data is breached.
